Summary : More of a history book than a buyers' guide.
This is a great book and well written. However, it is more of a history book on the BMW motorcycles than it is a buyer's guide. There is very little information on pricing and the author is very generous to the BMW legacy without being especially helpful to prospective buyers. I put it down having learned alot about the BMW line but probably more confused about which BMW to buy than when I picked it up. If you want to learn about the bikes it is great, if you are a newcomer and you want basic buying info, I am not sure that this is the best book.

Summary : It should be a much better book
For all the hype, this is a Very light account. For a start the book was half the size I expected... Most of the contents just seemed to be a repeat of what has already been in the papers in the last year. I certainly didn't feel it had the "insider story" as claimed. There is no introduction story, so if you did not know about Rover-BMW then you would be in the dark straight away. Some statistics charting the company's decline would have been good, ie market share, units produced etc. An account of the models produced their strengths and weaknesses would have been helpful. Likewise an account of all the main key people would have helped. There are no photographs as well. As for being the basis of a Harvard Business School case study, no way especially when it lacks so much detail. Worse still it is written like an article in the Daily Mail, there is large bold type on virtually every page to sensationalise what has already been written.
I didn't intend to be so negative, but it is a subject which deserves a far better book.

Summary : A Great Reference Source
This book basically taught me one thing: that when it's time to do repairs or service on my E36, it's best to take it to a dealer or independent shop. The E36 is so complex, requiring the correct tools, that unless you REALLY know what you're doing, fixing your car might bring on more damage. Having said that, it is a wonderful resource for ANYONE who has an interest on what makes their E36 tick, and gives some great tips to keep it ticking like a Swiss watch.

Summary : Wonderful guide of what accessory/part is appropriate
This isn't a how-to manual because it doesn't go into repair and restoration enough to get your hands greasy. What this book IS, is a wonderful guide of what accessory/part is appropriate for each year BMW motorcycle. The photos are extensive and very educational in leading you to a complete vintage BMW with accessories appropriate for the year of your bike. The author, Roland Slabon, is president of the Vintage BMW Owners, Ltd club world-wide and editor of the club newsletter.

Summary : A must for the 3 series owner
This book is invaluable to any 3 series owner, especially those with the later models incorporating the M52 engine. I have been an avid fan of the Haynes manuals for many years but they have no plans to produce a Workshop manual for the later 3 series cars. The book has been written for the US market, hence the terms Hood,Trunk and Fenders, however, that in no way detracts from the wealth of information available. The drawings are of high quality, as are the photographs and electrical diagrams.
There are many special tools required to work on these sophisticated cars and it would have been worth the time and trouble to details possible alternatives, or show how some of these tools could be manufactured by the dedicated DIY mechanic.
All things taken into account, this book offers a wealth of information, and in the absence of any other publication, a must for the BMW 3 series owner.

Summary : Good overall, but needs more detail of US 2002 models.
The book was authoritive in its portrayal of the 2002's history and gave very good advice in what to look for in purchacing one. In my opinion too much of the book was spent covering extremely rare 2002s and ones that were not imported to the US. I would have rather seen more detail on the more common US models and more detail pictures of what the original (US) equipment was like. Some of the pictures and English terminology were not very clear to me. If you're interested in buying a 2002 it is a good book to have, but you may want to supplement it with others.
