Title : BMW 2002: A Comprehensive Guide to the Classic Sporting Saloon

Summary : Good overall, but needs more detail of US 2002 models.

The book was authoritive in its portrayal of the 2002's history and gave very good advice in what to look for in purchacing one. In my opinion too much of the book was spent covering extremely rare 2002s and ones that were not imported to the US. I would have rather seen more detail on the more common US models and more detail pictures of what the original (US) equipment was like. Some of the pictures and English terminology were not very clear to me. If you're interested in buying a 2002 it is a good book to have, but you may want to supplement it with others.

Being a BMW "M" series fan, I was naturally attracted to this book. However, imagine my disappointment when I opened to package to find it only covered models up to 1997, not mentioned on the cover. 1997 models, being 7 years old are quite frankly out of date. For a classic "M" enthusiast this would be an interesting book, but for those who dream of the the latest M3 and M5s and their superb designs it scores only 2 stars I'm afraid.

Summary : TOTAL ENDORSEMENT

In their July 2001 issue, Total BMW magazine comment of this book in their opening paragraph: "There are 3-Series books already out there but this beats them all to pulp. Written by BMW expert Jeremy Walton, the BMW Enthusiast's Companion leaves no stone unturned in charting the history of the car from the 2002 age to the 340 bhp E46 M3. If you wanto to know it then it's in here somewhere."

There is more in a similar positive vein, but potential buyers should note that the title was published in the USA. It does cover all the major European moves and even some of the more obscure South African specials, but British model changes are not specifically covered. In 368 pages and more than 350 black and white illustrations there are myriad facts and figues, plus the full 7-chapter story on three generations of M3 and their racing cousins.

Summary : A riveting summary of the Rover/BMW debacle

This is a highly readable tale of the purchase of Rover by BMW and the ensuing fiasco, climaxing in the sell out to Phoenix. There are some fascinating insights into the behind the scenes machinations of BMW, the unions, the government and Alchemy at the time of BMW's attempts to get rid of Rover. Funnily enough - Alchemy who were cast as the villains of the piece by the British press are practically the only players who come out the whole mess smelling of roses.

My only criticism is that this is quite a high level strategic view and there is not much detail on what went wrong at the operational level - I would have liked to have known more!

Summary : More of a history book than a buyers' guide.

This is a great book and well written. However, it is more of a history book on the BMW motorcycles than it is a buyer's guide. There is very little information on pricing and the author is very generous to the BMW legacy without being especially helpful to prospective buyers. I put it down having learned alot about the BMW line but probably more confused about which BMW to buy than when I picked it up. If you want to learn about the bikes it is great, if you are a newcomer and you want basic buying info, I am not sure that this is the best book.
